Study Visit of The Prague Process Participants at The Migration Department
A group of experts from the Prague Process paid a study visit to the Migration Department on Tuesday.
The Prague Process is one of the EU’s four regional cooperation processes on migration, promoting partnership on migration issues. These processes help focus on a region’s specificities, identify common interests, consolidate efforts to respond to everyday challenges, strengthen cooperation on migration management, and help EU partners build their capacities.
The delegation, which included migration experts and specialists from 14 countries, was briefed on the structure, functions, and key performance indicators of the Migration Department. The participants were also told about the peculiarities of the Lithuanian migration information system MIGRIS, the improvement of its functioning, and the service launched at the beginning of the year — the option to apply for temporary residence permits in Lithuania to the offices of external service providers in 34 countries around the world.

The guests were interested in the work organisation of the departments of the Migration Department, the range of services provided to Lithuanian and foreign citizens, client flows, service peculiarities, mechanisms of inter-departmental information exchange, etc.
The Prague Process region, which includes the countries of the European Union, Schengen, South-Eastern and Eastern Europe, and Central Asia, has faced many crises and challenges in recent years. These include the Russian-instigated war against Ukraine that forced many Ukrainians to flee their homes, the departure of Russians and Belarusians from their home countries due to the threat of repression and mobilisation, the Belarusian regime’s hybrid attack using illegal migration, the Taliban takeover of Afghanistan that threatened regional security, the Syrian refugee crisis, the coronavirus pandemic and its consequences, and so on. All of these events had a significant impact on the societies and migration processes of the Prague Process countries.
